Mayor Petrović at the World Forum of Mayors in Geneva
Mayor Ljubiša Petrović is participating in the World Forum of Mayors held in Geneva, organised by the United Nations.
This year, the Forum focuses on sustainable development goals – public health and actions aimed at reducing the rate of illnesses caused by water, soil and air pollution, gender equality and the prevention of discrimination and violence against women and girls, along with the creation of equal opportunities for education and participation in social life, economic growth in line with environmental protection principles, social policies that include direct support to citizens (housing support), the strengthening of volunteerism, the implementation of city greening programmes and the raising of ecological awareness among the population.
Participation in this year’s Forum in Geneva not only represents the promotion and presentation of Bijeljina within the United Nations, but also a much broader representation – since the representatives of the City Administration of Bijeljina are the only ones in Bosnia and Herzegovina who received an invitation to participate in the World Forum of Mayors.
Commenting on his address to the participants of the Forum, Mayor Ljubiša Petrović pointed out that it was an excellent opportunity to present the projects implemented by the City of Bijeljina related to environmental protection, social policy, support for education, and the fight for equality.
“It is a great honour to represent one’s city at such an international event as the Forum of Mayors. This is proof that our Bijeljina has been recognised as a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina which, independently and without the support of higher levels of government, initiates the largest number of projects related to sustainable development goals,” said Petrović, adding that the invitation remains open for partnership with other cities and institutions.
Emphasising that Bijeljina has been recognised internationally as a local community making significant progress in various areas of social life, thereby showing a different face of the country we live in, Petrović underlined that participation in the Forum is also an important step forward in implementing the environmental project “Let’s Clean Semberija”, planned for next year.
