Bijeljina – host of inclusive games

Within the ‘Moving Us Closer’ project, sports inclusive event for children with developmental disabilities was organised at Kralj Petar I Karađorđević Square. This activity was organised in collaboration of the City of Bijeljina, the Embassy of Italy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Athletic Club “Atletik” Bijeljina, and Special Olympics Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim was to create positive impacts in the fight against discrimination, exclusion, prejudice, and the prevention of hate speech.

The event was opened by the advisor to the Mayor, Radoslav Ostojić, who emphasized that the inclusion of all segments of the population into the society is very important, and therefore, the City always gladly supports projects like this.

On behalf of the United Nations Population Fund, program analyst Hector Ramirez addressed the audience.
“We are presenting the Fusion Fiesta Festival and, as part of it, the ‘Moving Us Closer’ project, which was funded by the Government of Italy and implemented by the Embassy of Italy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United Nations Population Fund. Bijeljina is one of the seven cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina that have accepted to organise this event,” said Ramirez.

The Executive Director of the Special Olympics organisation, Kada Delić Selimović, stated that today's event maintains the continuity of activities and collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, involving the cities of Sarajevo, East Sarajevo, Brčko, Bijeljina, Bosanski Petrovac, Tuzla, and Banja Luka.
It is planned for each of these cities to host and organise inclusive basketball or ‘three-on-three’ and ‘five-on-five’ games. With great gratitude to the City Administration and coordinators, I hope that today we will enjoy what is the goal of this project, and that a beautiful image from Bijeljina will be sent to the world, along with the message that inclusion is not just talked about here, but lived,” emphasized Delić Selimović.

Members of the Athletic Club ‘Atletik’, children with developmental disabilities from the Day Centre, members of the Coalition ‘Kolosi’ - the associations ‘Arta’ and ‘Nada’, OFK ‘Junajted’, as well as basketball teams from seven cities, participated in the inclusive games.
